Ne-Yo’s wife, Crystal Renay Smith, makes their separation official by filing for divorce.
According to TMZ, the 36-year-old claims the “Because of You” singer has fathered a child with another woman — in addition to the three children he has with his wife of six years.
The divorce docs, which were filed earlier this week in Atlanta, say that the couple’s marriage is “irretrievably broken with no hope for reconciliation.” The papers also mention that they separated on July 22, 2022 and that Crystal has been taking taking care of the three children since the split.
Additionally, TMZ shared that the mom of three is asking for primary physical custody of the kids, joint legal custody, child support and alimony.
Ne-Yo and Crystal have been public about their tumultuous relationship in the past. In 2020, the couple filed for divorce after four years of marriage — but withdrew the petition to work things out during the pandemic.
Smith told the Tamron Hall Show back in 2020, “I chose to go to therapy and to start working on my pain and my issues and everything I was dealing with internally. I feel like that was the right step for me to get past it, so whether we were going to be together or not, I had to heal for myself, so I could get up and perform for my kids.”
Ne-Yo also told Good Morning Britain in October of 2021, “The pandemic saved my marriage, we were talking full-on divorce. It forced us to sit down and talk about our problems and re-connect with our kids. There’s only so much FaceTime you can do.”
The news comes after Crystal took to Instagram last week in a now-deleted post detailing the artist’s numerous affairs and announcing the couple’s split.
“8 years of lies and deception. 8 years of unknowingly sharing my life and husband with numerous women who sell their bodies to him unprotected.. every last one of them! To say I’m heartbroken and disgusted is a understatement,” she said.
Ne-Yo then took to Twitter moments after, saying, “For the sake of our children, my family and I will work through our challenges behind closed doors. Personal matters are not meant to be addressed and dissected in public forums. I simply ask that you please respect me and my family’s privacy at this time.”

It seemed as if all was going well for the two, as they recently threw a lavish vow renewal ceremony Vegas style in April and walked the red carpet together at the 2022 BET Awards in Los Angeles on June 26.
Shortly after the vow renewal in April, Ne-Yo told podcast host Janine Rubenstien from People Everyday while promoting his new music, “We’ve learned to genuinely listen to each other, we’ve learned to slow down in a moment and really figure out whether or not the emotion that we’re trying to jump to is the emotion that should be placed in that situation.”
