MSG Networks announces streaming service to watch Knicks, Rangers, Islanders games for $10 each
Fans of some New York and New Jersey teams will have a new way to watch their teams without a cable package.
Madison Square Garden Networks unveiled its own streaming platform, MSG+, on Wednesday. The service will launch this summer with subscription costs at a $29.99 monthly rate, a $309.99 annual rate or a per-game rate of $9.99 for the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres. Users who already pay for MSG through their cable providers won't be charged extra and MSG+ will replace MSG GO as the company's streaming platform. The subscription will also include MSG Network, MSG SportsNet and other live sports and events through the company.
“MSG Networks is delighted to be able to offer fans more ways to watch our compelling and award-winning content,” Andrea Greenberg, MSG Networks President and CEO, said in a statement. “The introduction of MSG+ this summer will be a significant milestone for our company and will offer a mix of subscription options for fans who do not subscribe to a traditional, bundled pay television subscription."
This news comes months after Comcast Xfinity pulled MSG from its cable packages.
This announcement comes at a critical juncture for regional sports networks and streaming services for professional sports.
The bankruptcy of Bally Sports could create a tumultuous environment for the industry, especially after the company launched its streaming platform, Bally Sports+, in 2022 for $19.99 per month across 19 networks. AT&T SportsNet, which operates in Denver, Houston and Pittsburgh, could also be headed in the same direction as Bally. NESN, another network that covers New England teams, also launched a streaming platform in 2022 for $29.99 per month. Scripps Sports, which recently launched, could swoop into the voids left by Bally or AT&T.
There are always the bigger national streaming platforms as well. NBA League Pass costs $14 per month or $45 per year if you only follow one team. MLB TV costs $25 per month or $130 per year for one team. The NFL has two options: NFL+ for $5-10 per month or its traditional Sunday Ticket package (now on YouTube TV). ESPN+ is also an option that costs $10 per month or $100 for a year.
